Gmat Test Preparation Pointers -- Admission Business School
63The MBA degree is highly sought after; GMAT is the entry test for admissions to business schools
Business schools across the country determine candidates for their programs based on factors such as work experience, grades during undergrad, along with -- and in great consideration -- the GMAT test. The GMAT test is scored out of 800; a score of 700 or more is considered to be excellent.
Get off on the right foot
The GMAT test is computer adaptive and front loaded. This means wrong answers in the beginning hurt the difficulty of subsequent questions and place a ceiling on the range of the scores. Alternately, performing well in the first several questions will set up a floor of confidence as a harder questions follow. At first, the computer scoring system knows nothing about your ability, so each question narrows the range of precision, and in the later part, questions have little effect on the approximate range you score in.
General structure
The analytic writing assessment is a perfunctory part of the GMAT; in it the person is required to address a prompt in 30 minutes.
The test consists of two sections, both of which are timed. The quantitative section contains 37 questions to be answered in 75 minutes. This gives two minutes to answer each question and; although, the questions are not onerous, they do require time and attention. The question types are split between computational problems, where only one answer is right, based on deducing a variable in question, and the other side of the coin is answering data sufficiency questions where some information is given, and the conditions that must be used to determine some proof are provided in two statements. The answers are referential and point to the conditions to frame the question of what information is needed to reach a valid conclusion.
The verbal section of the test contains 41 questions in three sections, at 75 minutes time to completion. Reading comprehension is tested with passages and related questions. Critical reasoning, another section, involves a scenario and a logical test question. The last section is sentence correction, where underlined text must either be substituted with the best alternative or let alone.
Basic synopsis
Practice is the key to preparation, and practice under time constraints is the best preparation. To review for the quantitative section, it is best to familiarize oneself with algebra, statistics, arithmetic, and geometry. The smart way to practice for the reading portion is to practice sheer efficient reading; this is measured by how fast one can read a passage and recall important points, so the need to reread does not present, wasting valuable time. Test completion is crucial and failure to finish is penalized severely.
The first diagnostic test should suggest the limit for improvement, where the most one can improve from baseline is ~ 75-150 points. The format of the test is redundant and therefore important as a study parameter.
The test is a vital part of the determination whether a candidate should be admitted. In some cases it can compensate for weakness in the other areas of admissions criteria. Resultantly, there are many test preparation companies that offer to provide instructors who've taken the GMAT and performed well, and claims that you can dramatically raise the score are rampant. Kaplan is a noted participant in the market, along with others such as the Princeton review, and Manhattan GMAT, which operates a website and sells six actual practice tests, with scoring analysis.
